Causes of Constipation
Constipation is a very common gastrointestinal condition in which it becomes very difficult to excrete. Constipation might be a symptom of some other illness. Constipation all by itself is a very serious disorder which may cause severe pain and may lead to further digestive complication if it is not treated properly and timely fashion.
Constipation is generally caused by dietary intake that lack in water and fiber. Modern day diet often lacks or contains very less amount of fiber. There are two types of dietary fiber Soluble and Insoluble dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is found in vegetables, fruits and grains including wheat and rice.
Soluble fiber dissolve in water and form a gel like substance once it reaches large intestine and this gel like substance helps in the movement of bowels. Insoluble fiber on the other hand does not dissolve in water but it still makes passing through intestine much easier.
Fats and proteins are hard to digest and produce by products which are difficult to excrete. If diets that consist of lot of Fats and proteins but lack fibers and water is consumed often it can lead to constipation.
Intake of diets lacking of fluids is another common cause of constipation. Dry stools are very difficult to pass through and are very dense so liquids is very important to process waste materials and to make bowel movements easier. Those who are already suffering from Constipation may find water and other liquids very helpful in relieving constipation. It is very important to know that not all fluids hydrate such fluids include alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages. Such drinks instead of hydrating the body take water away from body or in other words dehydrate the body which can cause the constipation to get worse.
Constipation may also be caused by intake of some particular kind of medications such as antidepressants and anticonvutsants. Iron supplements and blood pressure medications and Narcotics are some of the main medications that can lead to constipation if taken in abnormal doses.
Constipation is not considered a disease and it can be avoided by careful attention to ones dietary intake and health and exercise habits.
